THE CINEMATIC WORLD OF LAUREL AND HARDY: THE BOYS

by Scott Allen Nollen

Book

Published in 1989, Scott Allen Nollen's examination of the cinematic and thematic techniques of Laurel and Hardy reads more like a listing of individual gags and moments than a critical analysis. There are some interesting sections on the camera techniques used often in the films, and some thoughts on the differences between Laurel and Hardy and contemoraries like Chaplin and the Marx Brothers.  However, there are rarely those moments of true insight, the things that make you go "hmmmm", as can be found in other analytical musings on the Boys such as Charles Barr's LAUREL AND HARDY or Walter Kerr's chapter on Laurel and Hardy in THE SILENT CLOWNS. THE CINEMATIC WORLD OF LAUREL AND HARDY is a nice but non-essential contribution to the L&H library.
